In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Empower Youth in Technology (EYIT), a tech-based organization located in Mbarara, developed a new app called “My Blood app” to help blood donors donate easily despite the restrictions.

Due to the pandemic, many blood donation centres across the world have been closed or have limited hours, leading to a significant drop in blood donations. This shortage of blood has put many patients’ lives at risk, especially those with chronic illnesses and injuries that require frequent transfusions.

Realizing the urgency of the situation, EYIT set out to develop a solution to help bridge the gap between blood donors and patients in need. My Blood app is a user-friendly app that allows blood donors to register and schedule appointments for blood donation.

The app has several features, including a blood donation history section that shows the user’s previous donations, a blood donation centres  locator, and a notification system that reminds donors of their upcoming donation appointments.

“We wanted to create an app that would make it easy for people to donate blood, especially during this pandemic when there are so many restrictions and challenges,” said EYIT’s CEO, Tushabe Ronald

My Blood has been well received by the community, and many donors have praised the app for its convenience and ease of use. The app has also helped to increase the number of blood donations in the Mbarara region.

EYIT hoped that My Blood app will continue to be a valuable tool for blood donors and help to save more lives during these challenging times.

“We believe that technology can be a powerful tool for social change, and My Blood is just one example of how we can use it to make a difference in people’s lives,” added Ronald.

As the world continues to navigate the pandemic, innovative solutions like My Blood serve as a reminder that even in difficult times, there is always hope and a way to make a positive impact.
